The garden, originally a muddy field and piles of clay, became a level lawn with paths and planting beds. Adding a number of semi-mature trees - white flowering cherries, a handkerchief tree, standard Sorbus trees - the garden felt well-established from the start. Creating huge planting beds, with grasses, roses and autumn colour, helped to give this garden a feeling of permanence. The terrrace provided a large entertaining space with a cantilevered deck to one side for more relaxed seating.
